What is the attitude towards gay and lesbian travelers?
Despite the concept of "machismo" and the strong influence of the Catholic church, Mexico is more progressive in this aspect than you might expect. Gay and lesbians rarely attract open discrimination or violence, and there are large gay communities in Mexico City (in particular the Zona Rosa district has a vibrant gay scene), Guadalajara, and other major cities and tourist destinations. Especially the liberal beach resort town of Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for gay travelers.
