Most places in Mexico are safe to travel but, just like in any other place in the world, there is always a chance of experiencing some danger or annoyance. A couple of precautions can be taken, to minimize risks. The first rule, avoid places with a reputation of having high crime rates. Check travel advisories, ask local people or other travelers, or contact us for advice. We recommend traveling by day. Use common sense — particular exercise caution when in crowds, markets or on public transportation. Pickpockets can be creative and sometimes work in pairs. Take a (secure) taxi instead of walking at night. If you walk at night, do not go where there are few people, avoid empty streets. Don´t carry too much cash with you and it´s better to keep valuables in your hotel (preferably in a safe or a locked bag). Try to be discreet with your valuables and don´t keep these items in open view any longer than necessary. In the unfortunate case of a robbery, don´t resist!

Use ATM´s at secure locations, preferably at day time. You might want to keep your bank cards, passports, and cash in a money belt. Before departure to Mexico, scan your passport and travel documents and e-mail them to yourself. That way, if your documents are lost or stolen, you can easily access copies from your e-mail. Take your bank or credit card's international telephone number with you.

Don´t forget, with a little common sense, most places in Mexico are perfectly safe for traveling, and almost all people who travel to Mexico have a wonderful time and don't encounter any problems.
