First of all, we want to emphasize that the relative risk of malaria in Mexico is low. However, it does exist in certain parts of Mexico. There is no malaria risk along the United States–Mexico border. In Jalisco, Quintana Roo, Sonora, and Tabasco there are rare cases. In Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit, and especially Chiapas and Oaxaca malaria is present (in rural areas).

Malaria is transmitted by mosquito bites. So, to prevent malaria, you should try to avoid mosquito bites.  You may choose to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, depending on your travel plans. Please consult your doctor for more detailed information.
