It is very common to take a cab in Mexico, and it´s a cheap and comfortable way to get around. Usually, taxi drivers use their taxi meter, which automatically calculates the rate according to the distance and time of your ride. If they don´t use their taxi meter, you have to negotiate a price before getting in. In the evenings, taxi drivers usually charge more than during the day. Airports,  bus terminals, and hotels often work with a system of authorized taxis. In rural areas taxis may operate on a "colectivo" basis, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way
